Born Last Summer is the first proper collection of photography by Brett W. Naucke from 2003-2023.

While not presented in chronological order, the first image in this series was shot on July 4th, 2003 while the last was shot on July 4th, 2023. These images were captured during the summer months in Missouri, Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia on 35mm film over this 20 year period.

I’ve often referenced the 1980’s pop hit “Cruel Summer” by Bananarama while working on this project as the the melody and motif of the song perfectly reflect the lyrics about feeling alone and oppressed by the summer heat. That dismal isolation perfectly provides an equally honest spin off from other ‘fun-in-the-sun’ music and movie narratives we’ve come to know yet both are equally true depictions of American summer. The images in this book, often selected in dichotomous pairs, reflect these equally hopeful and dreary sentiments that are born again each summer.

This collection could easily be viewed as the visual compendium to much of my discography.
